Abstract: The opening operation of the flap of a valve unit of a mass-exchange plate is studied. The hydraulic loss in the valve is measured by local resistance, gas density, and gas velocity. In the valve the hydraulic losses consist of A /SUB pa/ losses in the aperture tray and the resistance D /SUB p/ a in the valve gap. The local resistance coefficient of the plate valve is calculated as a function of the valve dimensions and given parameters. The value of overall local resistance coefficient for various sizes and opening angles is determined, with similar results to previous studies. It is found that the resistance coefficient increases as the aperture tray decreases. Knowing the dimensions of contact devices of trays, equations can be used to calculate the local resistance of the tray. The equations developed are recommended for engineering calculations.
