Title: Negative chemical ionization spectra of aromatic acids and esters or are negative chemical ionization spectra of use only if one knows what one is looking for?
Abstract: Abstract It is shown that the appearance of negative chemical ionization spectra where the reactant gas is allegedly used only to produce low energy electrons is dependent upon instrumental parameters as well as the type of reactant gas used. Reactions with neutral or positive plasma particles, ion/molecule reactions of the substrate, and side reactions with ubiquitous trace impurities (O 2 , H 2 O) resulting in ions with masses above that of the molecular ion, as well as differing energy distributions of the thermal electrons which are of importance for the fragmentation behaviour can drastically influence the appearance of a mass spectrum.
