Title: Addressing problems of literacy in disadvantaged communities
Abstract: Abstract This article looks at the marginalisation of South African children from disadvantaged backgrounds in terms of the literacy environment and the possible negative effects of this on their learning and retention of literacy. The strategy of using family literacy programmes to help parents and educators to address this issue is discussed. Practical advice on setting up a family literacy programme is given, as well as an outline of some of the successful programmes that have been used in South Africa.
