Before the 1970s the overwhelm...In recent years, the evaluation [of the political role] of the monarchical constitutionalists at the end of the Qing has attracted widespread attention among historians. Before the 1970s the overwhelming majority of Chinese historians denied that the consti-constitutionalists had made any contribution at all, while, at the other extreme, not a few foreign historians thought their contribution was so crucial that they, not the Alliance Society, were the main force of the revolution. After an exchange of views, Chinese historians are now more divided than ever on this issue and further discussion on it seems needed. The general pattern of the constitutionalists' activities in the revolution was the promotion of "peaceful independence," and therefore it is the theme of this article.Read More
