Title: Strategy for inversion of ill‐posed problems
Abstract: A strategy is proposed to cope with the serious ‘ill-posedness’ of the seismic inversion problem. The involved parameters are subdivided in three classes, i.e. surface parameters, macro subsurface parameters and detailed target parameters. Each parameter class is estimated in a separate step and the influence of those parameters are removed from the seismic data, before entering the next inversion step. It is argued that for each inversion step the most suitable inversion method should be chosen and the use of additional, nonseismic information should be maximized. The proposed strategy results in an economic inversion procedure (particularly in 3D) and provides maximum confrol by the user.
