Abstract: Abstract The Internet grew from a concept of a distributed network with no central node and authority. Services were added to provide basic functionality with the interconnected nodes. With the advent of the Web came a single, all encompassing interface to the services provided by the Internet. This was parallelled with developments in initiatives for seeking and accessing information for particular user communities. This paper discusses the developments that have occurred to the Web in the areas of new services or gateways to existing services, information providers and web browsers. Some of these developments have been applied to accessing geoscience data, but not all.
