Abstract: Abundances of fourteen trace elements were determined for ten representative tholeiitic basalts from the Northeast Japan arc by instrumental neutron activation analysis and fission track methods. Comparison of geochemical features of the tholeiitic basalts from the Kurile, Northeast Japan and Izu-Bonin arcs suggests that island arc tholeiites in Japan can be further classified into at least two types: Izu-Bonin type and Northeast Japan type. The latter type island arc tholeiites have relatively higher La/Yb and Th/U ratios than the former.
