Title: Hybridization in eight-coordinated square antiprism complexes
Abstract: The distribution of s and dcharacter of general snp3d5−n hybrids describing eight-coordinated square antiprism complexes is investigated. It is found that the participation of dz2 in hybridization depends critically on the magnitude of the ratio of metal-ligand orbital overlaps. Several complexes of rhenium, thallium, tungsten and zirconium are discussed. Hybrids of the form s12p3d02 approximately describe all the individual cases and may well represent a typical hybridization for the first- and second-row transition metals in complexes of the square antiprism structure.
