Abstract: This one-volume, comprehensive textbook of neurological surgery represents an atavistic return to an earlier day of writing in which one author, and one author only, attempted to set forth his entire storehouse of clinical knowledge in one definitive textbook. The author, Mr. D.W.C. Northfield of Latimer, "Bucks," England, graciously acknowledges the suggestions made by his colleagues. However, each of the 24 chapters in this book is written by one man, the author, and they cover such diverse subjects as special investigations (radiology), electroencephalography, gamma-encephalography, and neuropathology. In this age of multiple-authored textbooks in which the senior author acts as the collector and editor, perhaps adding a chapter or two of his own, this book is unique. How well has the author managed to convey his personal wealth of information? I think he has done it beautifully. He graciously acknowledges his debt to his teacher, Sir Hugh Cairns of Oxford, England,
