Abstract: The advantage of a “dynamic” rather than retrospective investigation of blood transfusion therapy is illustrated in this study. Positive criteria for the administration of whole blood are discussed in relation to the transfusion practices on the surgical, medical and obstetric‐gynecologic services of a large general hospital. Approximately 25 per cent ol the multiple and 60 per cent of the single unit transfusion were not indicated. The differences between the services regarding administration and indication for blood and the incidence of transfusion reactions are described. This study points out the need for periodic checking and education of persons responsible for blood transfusion therapy.
