Abstract: As in adults, the eosinophil is normally found in the blood and tissues of children in small numbers. It is an enigmatic cell whose function is still incompletely understood. There is a variety of abnormal conditions and disease states in which eosinophil concentrations in the blood and certain tissues increases to usually high levels, termed eos~~op~il~. Although many of the conditions associated with eosinophilia in children are the same as those seen in adults, there are some eosinophilic conditions that are seen much more commonly in children than adults, including a few that are rarely, if ever, seen in adults. In this article a coherent approach to the diffe~tial diagnosis of eosinophilia in the child is provided.
