Title: Mechanism of release of α-methylated noradrenaline analogues by monoamine oxidase inhibitors
Abstract: Previous investigations have shown that α-methylated analogues of noradrenaline taken up by adrenergic neurons are slowly released by inhibitors of monoamine oxidase. In the present paper it is demonstrated that this release is inhibited by pretreatment with dopa/5-HTP inhibitors such as 3-hydroxy-benzylhydrazine (NSD 1015) and seryl-2, 3, 4-trihydroxybenzylhydrazine. In the doses employed these inhibitors prevented the accumulation of endogenous monoamines brought about by monoamine oxidase inhibition. The amine release induced by monoamine oxidase inhibitors may thus be due to displacement by accumulating endogenous monoamines. Noradrenaline and possibly also other monoamines appear to be involved in this displacement.
