Title: Information policies of international organizations
Abstract: Major policy issues relating to the international flow of information are debated in various international, intergovernmental organizations (IGOs). These debates are often highly politicized and generally have diminished the reputation of the agencies, even though many IGOs themselves are large producers and disseminators of valuable information. The primary purpose of this article is to examine the flow of information from international organizations to users in libraries. First, the types of materials are explained before considering general and specific factors that either help or hinder the timely flow of information from IGOs to the public. Next, there is a review of the positive and negative factors affecting information flow in eight specific agencies, including the United Nations (UN), UNESCO and the International Telecommunication Union. These details enable the reader to get a picture of the restrictive or helpful information policies of the IGOs. With the growing importance of electronic information today, the final part of the article considers the question of access to IGO databases, highlighting a UN committee's study of public access to databases throughout the UN system of organizations.
