Abstract: When exposed to a non-sterile soil extract and light, six South African isolates of Pythium spinosum and two isolates from culture collections produced zoospores, a process which has not been reported for this species. Autoclaved and filter-sterilized soil extract, as well as a defined salt solution, failed to induce sporangial formation. The temperature growth response of the isolates differed, but the dimensions of sexual and asexual reproductive structures were closely similar.
