Title: Is Diversified Clinical Presentation of Kaposi Sarcoma–Associated Herpesvirus/Human Herpesvirus-8–Associated Lymphoma Related to the Host's Changed Conditions?
Abstract: Kaposi Sarcoma–Associated Herpesvirus/Human Herpesvirus-8 Kaposi sarcoma–associated herpesvirus (KSHV), also known as human herpesvirus-8 (HHV8), was initially discovered in tissue biopsies of AIDS-related Kaposi sarcoma (KS), a tumor consistently infected by this virus.1 In addition to KS, KSHV/HHV8 has been shown to associate with distinct lymphoproliferative diseases, occurring most commonly in persons with (HIV) infection/AIDS.2 Kaposi sarcoma–associated herpesvirus/human herpesvirus-8–associated lymphoproliferative diseases traditionally included primary effusion lymphoma (PEL),3 multicentric Castleman’s disease (MCD),4 and MCDassociated plasmablastic lymphoma.5,6 Today, the classification of KSHV/HHV8– associated lymphomas is changing increasingly because of new cases that are being reported whose clinical presentation varies. Recently, KSHV/HHV8 has been detected by immunohistochemistry and/or polymerase chain reaction in lymphoma cases presenting as tissue masses in persons with MCD6-9 or AIDS-associated KS.9-13 These lymphomas were described histologically as diffuse large-cell lymphoma or immunoblastic lymphoma with a PEL-like morphology.
