Title: Stability constants of some substituted salicyclic acids and their complexes
Abstract: Proton affinity constants of β-resorcyclic acid, gentisic acid, 2,3-cresotic acid and 2,4-cresotic acid and the formation constants of the metal chelates of uranyl, copper, nickel, cobalt, and beryllium ions with these reagents are determined in aqueous-dioxan medium containing 50 per cent dioxan by volume. The Calvin-Bjerrum pH titration technique has been adopted for the determination of proton affinity constants and the stability constants of the metal chelates. The values of the proton association constants of the reagents are interpreted in terms of resonance and inductive effects of substituents in the benzene ring. The log K values of the metal ligand systems are also discussed.
