Title: Biochemical genetics and taxonomy in Plumatella coralloides and P. fungosa, and a key to the British and European Plumatellidae (Bryozoa: Phylactolaemata)
Abstract: SUMMARY. Plumatella coralloides Allman 1850 has in the past been regarded as a synonym or variety of a number of species. Specimens conforming to Allman's (1850) original description have been found in a pond at Millwood, South Wales, and electrophoretic techniques have been used to examine genetic differences between this material, P. repens and P. fungosa . The results show that neither P. repens nor P. fungosa is conspecific with the Millwood material. Morphological evidence suggests that it should be regarded as P. coralloides , and it is therefore concluded that P. coralloides is a valid species. A revised key to the British and European Phylactolaemata (Bryozoa) is provided, together with some notes on the distribution of each species in Britain.
