Title: Neuronal abnormalities associated with impaired myelination during brain development: A Golgi study of neocortex in the Jimpy mouse
Abstract: In neocortex of a mutant mouse with impaired myelinogenesis (Jimpy), we found two types of dendritic abnormalities: (1) laterally skewed apical dendrites (>20°), and (2) vertically ascending tufts of collateral dendrites originating from the skewed apical shafts. Neurons with large globular soma (>25 μm diameter) were also seen in layers II and III. The neuronal abnormalities may be related to impaired growth of axons into cortex, this axon growth impairment, in turn, being associated with the impaired myelinogenesis. Alternatively, the neuronal abnormalities may be a separate expression of the genetic defect.
