Title: Master Station Architecture of a SCADA System
Abstract: The paper starts with a brief introduction to SCADA systems. The Differences between an Energy Management System and a SCADA system are explained. Certain salient features of a typical SCADA system are also mentioned. The Master Station Architecture of a SCADA system is the main thrust of this paper. The architecture includes the hardware components, software components, configurations, networks, performance, reliability concepts, and maintainability aspects. In earlier SCADA systems, hardware has been interfaced through unique interface protocols, and software has been written in a variety of languages and compiled with customized programs. The new trend is towards distributed computers and distributed functions, integrated using industry standards. These features allow an electric utility to replace and upgrade system hardware and software independent of the original supplier, thus enhances the potential to upgrade the SCADA system.
