However, a combination of technical problems, and also inexperience, limited the initial success and resulted in delayed acceptance of the procedure by others (2-4). The development of the Silastic® and Teflon® arteriovenous cannula in 1961 by the Seattle group did much to overcome these obstacles (5) and was largely responsible for the generation of renewed enthusiasm for chronic hemodialysis throughout the world.
