Title: Adrenal Catecholamine Response of the Infant Rat to Insulin-Provoked Hypoglycemia
Abstract: The adrenal catecholamine response of infant and adult rats to insulin hypoglycemia as determined. In addition, the effect of epinephrine on blood sugar in these animals was measured. The 1- to 2-day-old animal responded, as the adult, to insulin administration with a decrease in blood sugar and a decrease in adrenal epinephrine. Injections of epinephrine elevated the blood sugar in both infant and adult rats. It is concluded that the homeostatic mechanism that regulates blood sugar is functioning in the early postnatal period. This may be related to the neonatal regulation of suckling oriented behavior.
