Abstract: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in adulthood is emerging as an exciting new area of interest ( Weiss et al., 1999 Weiss M Weiss G Trokenberg Hechtman L ADHD in Adulthood: A Guide to Current Theory, Diagnosis and Treatment. Johns Hopkins University Press, Baltimore1999 Google Scholar ). Over the past decade this body of research has demonstrated that adult ADHD can be successfully diagnosed ( Nadeau, 1995 Nadeau K A Comprehensive Guide to Attention Deficit Disorder in Adults. Brunner/Mazel, New York1995 Google Scholar ) and treated ( Spencer et al., 1995 Spencer T Wilens T Biederman J Faraone SV Ablon S Lapey K A double-blind, crossover comparison of methylphenidate and placebo in adults with childhood-onset attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. Arch Gen Psychiatry. 1995; 52: 434-443 Crossref PubMed Scopus (378) Google Scholar , Wilens et al., 1995 Wilens TE Biederman J Spencer TJ Prince J Pharmacotherapy of adult attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder: a review. J Clin Psychopharmacol. 1995; 15: 270-281 Crossref PubMed Scopus (110) Google Scholar ). Adults with ADHD have more marital breakdowns, a poorer work record, more car accidents, and more interpersonal problems than adults who do not have ADHD ( Murphy and Barkley, 1996 Murphy K Barkley RA Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder adults: comorbidities and adaptive impairments. Compr Psychiatry. 1996; 37: 393-401 Crossref PubMed Scopus (576) Google Scholar ). All of these difficulties can also be expected to influence parenting, family functioning, and the child. We describe the clinical implications of ADHD in parents for assessment and treatment of their children.
