Abstract: This chapter focuses on the recent developments of nematode pests of fruit and citrus trees. Fruit trees include stone fruits, and pome fruits. The importance of various nematode species and their economic impact on tree fruit and citrus production was demonstrated during the 1950s and 1960s when soil fumigants with selective activity against plant-parasitic nematodes became available. Research in the future is likely to emphasize: interactions among different plant-parasitic nematodes and the effects they have on their host; and interactions between plant pathogens, nematodes, and their host. It also emphasizes continued search for improved rootstock nematode resistance and development of biological management technologies to control nematodes in production field situations, development of programs on application of cultural and biological technologies for use with existing integrated pest management programs, and exploration of the possibility of developing transgenic plants to control virus diseases.
