Abstract:Various physiological indices (i.e. body condition index, scope for growth and net growth efficiency) have been used to examine the metabolic state of the common cockle (Cerastoderma edule L.) at diff...Various physiological indices (i.e. body condition index, scope for growth and net growth efficiency) have been used to examine the metabolic state of the common cockle (Cerastoderma edule L.) at different sites in Southampton Water, U.K. The results show that there is a measurable difference in the condition index of cockles collected from different localities. These differences can be broadly related to the level of contamination of the site with metals and hydrocarbons. All the indices suggest that cockles inhabiting the eastern, less polluted side of Southampton Water are in a better metabolic state than in those from some sites on the western side close to industrial areas.
