Title: Exercise Intolerance and Muscle Contracture
Abstract: Exercise Intolerance and Muscle ContractureEditors: SERRATRICE, Georges, MD, FRCP (CHU de la Timone); POUGET, Jean, MD (CHU de la Timone); AZULAY, Jean-Philippe, MD (CHU de la Timone) Bibliographic Data: (SBN: 2–287-59669–0, Springer-Verlag New York, Inc., 1999, $109.00) 208 pages, contributors, soft cover Audiences: Exercise Scientists, Neurologists Subjects: Sports Medicine, Neurology, General Medicine Other Info: The book contains black-and-white illustrations. DESCRIPTION: This is a review of several diagnoses that have a clinical presentation of exercise intolerance and muscle contracture. PURPOSE: The intent is to present recent advances made in these areas and create unity within the field by classifying the various diagnoses that lead to these conditions. Symptoms and etiology of several diseases associated with exercise intolerance and muscle contractures are discussed. AUDIENCE: I agree with the editors’ assessment that this book will benefit practitioners from several medical disciplines including neurology, internal medicine, rheumatology, pathology, biochemistry, physiotherapy, and all others interested in research of neuromuscular disease. ASSESSMENT: I find this book to be an exceptional resource of review of the current slate of understanding about diseases that limit the ability to exercise and/or lead to muscle contracture. However, the chapter on therapeutic management of muscle contracture, which I am the most familiar with, seemed vague with respect to protocols for bracing and offered no new insight into the treatment of the condition.
