Title: Control of proline synthesis in Escherichia coli
Abstract: This investigation was designed to study control of proline biosynthesis in Escherichia coli W. Control has been localized in the first reduction stage, in the conversion of glutamic acid to glutamic γ-semialdehyde. This reaction is strongly inhibited by small amounts of proline in both resting and growing cells. The second reduction, of glutamic γ-semialdehyde to proline, proceeds unrestrainedly in the presence and absence of proline. A proline-excreting mutant strain has been isolated and in this strain reduction of glutamic acid to glutamic γ-semialdehyde is relatively insensitive to proline.
