Knowledge management is the combination of activities involved in gathering, organizing and sharing, analyzing and disseminating knowledge to improve an organizations performance. Expert systems are an intelligent technique for capturing tacit knowledge in a very specific and limited domain of human expertise. This article outlines the basic concepts of knowledge management and expert systems as it is applied in the corporate world, considers how it might be applied in education for enhancing the academic performance of the organization. Paper emphasizes that expert systems need to be an integral part of knowledge repository if knowledge management has to succeed.
