Title: Summoning the Spirit of Vichy and the Resistance:The Bridge on the River Kwaiand the Transformation of French Public Memory
Abstract: Hollywood's The Bridge on the River Kwai was the World War II film that more French people chose to see than any other in the history of French cinema up to its day. The article explores the film's origins and its impacts on French war memory. Kwai was the first of a series of films, French and Hollywood productions, that returned the war to a central place in French public discourse, closing the curtain on the previous decade's repressions. Kwai owed its phenomenal success in France to British director David Lean's significant alteration of French novelist Pierre Boulle's original story. Boulle's biting critique of collaboration through the safer abstraction of British prisoners of the Japanese was turned into a tale sympathetic to collaboration and complicating resistance. The result was a film that provided an unintended compromise between the war memories of the French Left and Right. The article draws on newspaper reviews to expose the manner in which the film was used within competing political discourses.
