Title: The AlpTransit scheme: New railway lines in base tunnels under the Swiss Alps
Abstract: AlpTransit is the Swiss answer to today's challenge in the field of land transportation. Switzerland's railway infrastructure needs a leap of modernization. The steep mountain railways across Gotthard, Ceneri and Lötschberg are to be supplemented by level tunnels through the base of the Swiss Alps. An enormous gain in productivity is predicted. The tunnels are up to 57 km long with an overburden greater than 2000 m. Somegeologiqal zones area challenge to the engineers. The tunnels are expected to open around 2007–2010.
