Title: Hydromagnetic wave observations in the vicinity of a magnetospheric plasma density gradient
Abstract: Data from the Bell Laboratories magnetometer stations in the Northern hemisphere are analyzed during a reported passage of the ISEE 1 and 2 spacecraft through the same local time sector as the ground‐based stations. The ground‐based data indicate that dominant hydromagnetic wave frequencies became higher with decreasing radial distance (decreasing latitude on the earth's surface), as was also indicated by the data recorded along the satellite track. Further, a wave resonance identified in the ground‐based data occurred at a sharp density gradient in the magnetosphere plasma as reported from ISEE particle experiments. The theoretical conditions for existence of this resonance are consistent with the satellite measurements of significant fluxes of Z >1 ions as contributors to the magnetosphere plasma population at this time.
