Title: Geographic meristic variation in Diplophos taenia Günther (Salmoniformes: Gonostomatidae)
Abstract: Examination of over 500 specimens of the mesopelagic gonostomatid fish Diplophos taenia Günther revealed a striking but puzzling variability in central tendency of longitudinally arranged meristic characters. Attempts at correlation of this variation with various physical and biological oceanographic parameters revealed a highly significant negative correlationof central tendency in meristic counts with various measures of biological productivity, but no correlation with other physical parameters known to be associated with variation of meristic counts in other fishes.
