Title: Effect of the isomer composition of polyamide acids on the thermal imidization process
Abstract: Poly-o-carbomethoxyamides of varios isomeric structure, i.e. poly-4,4′-diphenyl oxide-2,4-dicarbomethozyisophthalamide and poly-4,4′-diphenyl oxide-2,5-dicarbomethoxy-terephthalamide, are synthesized from the dichlorides of dimethyl esters of pyromellitic acid. It is shown by IR and 1H NMR spectroscopy methods that the kinetics of thermal imidization and the degree of conversion in bulk depend on the isomeric composition of the polymer chains and on the presence of halides in solution. Precipitation of the polymers from solution with tolouence or water and subsequent drying of the samples at room temperature under reduced pressure result in imidation of ∼10% of the o-carbomethoxyamide fragments.
