Title: Diffusion in a finite system with a moving boundary
Abstract: Important characteristics of many oxidation reactions are associated with the infusion of oxygen into the metal in advance of the oxide-metal interface. The calculation of the resulting oxygen profiles generally involves the solution to the diffusion equation for a finite system with a moving boundary. While it was possible to obtain at least approximate analytical solutions in this case for the simplest initial and boundary conditions, it is apparent that these solutions are not easily applicable to many reactions of interest. In this paper, we will present the approximate analytical solutions to the finite-geometry moving-boundary problem, and compare results from these solutions with those obtained by a finite-difference method based on a simple model of the system. The excellent agreement in the computed profiles for the isothermal parabolic reactions is regarded as encouraging evidence that both methods are reasonably accurate and further suggests that the latter method would be an especially useful approach in examining diffusion behavior under more complicated conditions.
