Title: Household production and reproduction in rural languedoc: Social relations of petty commodity production in murviel‐lès‐béziers
Abstract: This article suggests that the unevenness of capitalist penetration into petty commodity production has resulted in the partial commodification of the relations of production both within and between household units of production. Based on an ethnographic study of family wine producers in a community in Languedoc, France, the author argues that the mobilisation of labour in production reflects this unevenness. Social relations are characterised by an admixture of commodified and non‐commodified features. The precise characterisation of the relations supersedes formulations based on extreme contrasts both between 'internal' and 'external' relations and between 'traditional' and 'commodity' ties.
