Title: Low frequency noise impact of road traffic in the Netherlands
Abstract: Current traffic noise impact assessments are usually based on broadband A-weighted noise indicators. A more complete picture and better correlation with annoyance and health effects may result from indicators that include temporal aspects and frequency character. These aspects are currently under investigation at RIVM. This paper gives an evaluation of low frequency noise impact from road traffic in the Netherlands. The results are based on low frequency noise maps covering the entire road network. In particular the effectiveness of various types of noise control measures, such as noise barriers or walls, porous asphalt layers and reduction of noise emission, with regards to low frequency impact were studied. The results indicate for low frequency noise levels, powertrain noise and freight traffic in general, are of major importance for environmental quality.
