Abstract: Zwei literaturwissenschaftliche Textsorten erleben gegenwärtig eine bemerkenswerte Konjunktur. Das gehäufte Auftreten von kurzen Geschichten einerseits und voluminösen Kompendien andererseits beruht auf einem Wandel wissenschaftlicher Publikationsbedingungen. Der Buchmarkt befindet sich in einer Überfüllungs- oder Absatzkrise. Es gibt zu viele Titel und zu wenige Käufer. Auf diese Lage reagieren die beiden Textsorten mit komplementären Strategien. Die dünnen, die komprimierten Bücher suchen die Konkurrenz des offenen Marktes. Sie zielen auf ein breiteres Publikum, das sich auf die Schnelle über das Wichtigste informieren will, das aber unwillig ist oder Schwierigkeiten hat, längeren Wortbeiträgen zu folgen. Die dicken, die ausladenden Bücher versprechen dagegen, die gesamte Fülle des Wissens zu einem Sachgebiet zu präsentieren. Es handelt sich um Bücher zum Nachschlagen und für Bibliotheken, die elektronische Zweitverwertung nicht ausgeschlossen. Ohne Zuschüsse kommen sie kaum zustande. Für die Drittmittelgeber gehören solche ‚Standardwerke‘ mittlerweile zu den Wunschprojekten. Das Handbuch als Investition in die Zukunft.
