Abstract: Adult learning theory was first introduced by Knowles in the 1970s. It is important because this theory focuses educators on understanding the learners, the key factor in designing effective continuing medical education programmes (CME). Adult learning theory has become the basis of many educational strategies in medicine, but there are dangers in uncritically accepting theories without evaluating the evidence. Knowles called this theory andragogy—the art and science of helping adults to learn— which he contrasted with pedagogy—teaching children to learn.
