Title: Nitrogen Mineralization and Uptake from Douglas‐Fir Forest Floors
Abstract: Abstract Many different plant species grow in the understory in association with Douglas‐fir [ Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco]. The nature of the forest floor that accumulates in a Douglas‐fir forest is influenced by these associated species. Nitrogen uptake from forest floor materials developed under nine commonly occurring stand understory conditions was evaluated in a greenhouse experiment with Douglas‐fir seedlings. The net mobilization of N as measured by the uptake of N by two successive crops of Douglas‐fir seedlings ranged for 0.34 to 9.89% of the amount added as organic matter. Net N mobilization was related only partially to total N content of the material.
