Title: The distribution of rotational energy in N2+excited by 3 kev Li+ions
Abstract: Results obtained by Reeves and Nicholls in 1961 on the distribution of rotational energy in N2+, formed by 2.0 and 3.2 kev Li+ ion excitation of N2, were interpreted as indicating a rotational disequilibrium in the target molecule. This work has been extended to much higher rotational quantum numbers, and it has been shown that the rotational levels are in fact populated according to a Boltzmann distribution at a greatly elevated rotational temperature of approximately 3500 °K.
