Anther-derived haploids of the African violet

Description: Anther culture of the African violet, Saintpaulia ionantha (Gesneriaceae), produces haploid plants directly from anthers at a low frequency. Successful anther culture for either this species or family has not been previously reported. Anthers between 3 mm and 5 mm in diameter are most suitable for culture. Root formation must be induced by the addition of indoleacetic acid to the medium.
