Title: Effect of Feed and Water Deprivation on Yolk Utilization in Chicks
Abstract: Shipping baby chicks deprives them of feed and water for 24- or 48-hour periods, and flocks that do not have adequately placed water and feed containers presumably could include individual chicks deprived for longer periods of time. Libby (1955), while studying the calcium content of egg yolk, observed that egg yolk was utilized less rapidly when baby chicks were deprived of feed and water. Romanoff (1960) reported on yolk weight values at various days of age during the first week in chicks. Twenty-four battery brooder pens containing 10 broiler chicks each were arranged into 6 groups of 4 batteries per group. Chicks in the first pen of each group received water but no feed, those in the second pen feed but no water, the chicks in the third pen neither feed nor water, and the fourth pen of chicks a normal feed and water supply.
