Title: [0023] Electro-clinical characteristics of juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME) initially misdiagnosed and treated as focal epilepsy
Abstract: Introduction. Juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME), a common idiopathic generalized epilepsy syndrome, responds well to valproate, which enables about 85% of its users to control their seizures. Juvenile myoclonic epilepsy can, however, be initially misdiagnosed as partial epilepsy—either when myoclonic seizures are taken for partial seizures or when electroencephalography (EEG) shows focal discharges. Treatment based on this diagnosis often results in poor outcomes. To identify the factors which differentiate JME from focal epilepsy, we review here the electro-clinical features of patients with JME who were initially diagnosed with and treated for focal epilepsy.
