Title: Elementary Students’ Comprehension of Anaphora in Well-Formed Stories
Abstract: This investigation examined third- and sixth-grade students' proficiency in comprehending anaphoric relations in well-formed stories selected from the students' instructional levels, as well as determining whether grade level affected students' comprehension of anaphora. In a 40-minute session within each classroom, 261 third graders and 175 sixth graders silently read a well-formed story and answered probe questions based on anaphoric relations within the story. Results indicated that the n??an percentage of correct responses for third-grade students was 72; and for sixth grade students, it was 78. The sixth-grade students achieved significantly higher levels of comprehension in anaphora than did the third graders.
