Title: The earthquake of September 6, 1933, and its bearing on the problem of the deep earthquake
Abstract: The earthquake recorded on September 6, 1933, throughout the world clearly manifested an exceptionally deep origin (Fig. 1). Quite in accordance with theory, only little of the energy of the disturbance appears in the upper strata as surface‐waves. These are either insignificant or absent altogether in a distant quake of moderate intensity whereas in a violent quake of normal depth (12 km) the maximum trace‐amplitude of the surface‐waves will be 5 to 30 times that of the S‐phase (Fig. 2).
