Of equal importance is the forward error correction (channel coding) required to maintain the fidelity of reconstructed images when they are transmitted through a noisy communications channel. This paper presents a design methodology based on end-to-end analysis of the communication channel from the sensor to the display monitor to develop the appropriate bit error model for the communications channel. Channels containing all white Gaussian and/or burst errors are addressed. These channels include rf data links, satellite relay links, digital tape recorders, and optical recording systems. An overview of the forward error correction codes required for error correction of these channels is also presented. The codes that are discussed include 1/2 rate convolutional, Reed-Solomon, concatenated 1/2 rate convolutional and Reed-Solomon, and 2-dimensional Reed-Solomon product codes. Extending the error correction capability of these codes through both block and helical interleaving is addressed.Read More
