Title: QUANTITATION OF ERYTHROPOIESIS BY A NEW METHOD
Abstract: Abstract. In new methods for the quantitative estimation of erythropoiesis and bone marrow cellularity using radioiron, inactive iron is given to block reutilization of radioiron. The efficiency of this blocking technique has been studied by giving two radioiron isotopes ( 59 Fe and 55 Fe), one before, the other after different doses and forms of inactive iron. It was found that 60 % of the radioiron is definitely destined for erythropoiesis, the remaining 40% may disturb quanti‐tation of erythropoiesis and marrow cellularity by reutilization. About half of this iron is reutilized in spite of blocking. Serum iron and reutilization of radioiron are significantly and inversely related. It is calculated that erythropoiesis is overestimated by 10% if this blocking technique is used.
