Title: Use of satellite geodesy for determination of geodetic and geodynamic parameters
Abstract: The different cosmic-geodetic methods using artificial Earth's satellites (laser and radio wave ranging), the Moon (laser ranging) and Quasars (VLBI) are described and characterized according to the efficiency for the determination of different geodetic and geodynamic parameters. Recent results are shown for Earth's rotation parameters, station coordinates, tectonic plate movements, the gravity field, tides and elastic parameters of the Earth. The obtained accuracies are about 1 to 3 cm for station positions refered to a geocentric frame, for terrestrial distances, and for pole coordinates. The variations of the Earth rotation can be determined with an accuracy of better than 0.1 ms, and for the Love numbers kz and hz one can get an uncertainty of less than 0.5% and 2%, respectively. The accuracy of the tidal parameters is very different for the different tidal constituents; the expansion of the gravity potential has recently been completed up to degree and order 360 of spherical harmonics. These parameters are relevant input information for geological studies of the Earth's surface, crust and lithosphere. Some phenomena are outlined more in detail.
