Title: Effects of pipeline strains from longwall mining are analyzed
Abstract: This first of two articles on the effects of longwall mining on underground pipelines presents a technique for monitoring pipeline strain due to soil subsidence. A pipeline's chances for surviving longwall mining activities beneath it can be increased. Flexural strains can only be reliably altered by raising or lowering portions of the pipeline to reduce curvature. This can be done without taking the pipeline out of service.
