Abstract Imaging and spectroscopic observations of a complete sample of emission-line galaxy (ELG) candidates from the University of Michigan objective-prism survey Lists IV and V have been obtained in order to investigate fully the properties of the survey constituents as well as the selection characteristics and completeness limits of the survey itself. The imaging data include accurate total magnitudes, B - V colors, apparent diameters, and morphological and environmental information for 166 objects. Spectra were obtained for all but five of the ELG candidates. The spectroscopic data include redshifts, optical reddening estimates, emission-line ratios, line fluxes, and equivalent widths. We find that 95% of the objects in this sample for which adequate data are available do exhibit emission lines. We compare our observational data with parameters given in the published survey lists in order to assess the usefulness of the latter. Contour diagrams of the CCD images and plots of the spectra of selected galaxies are presented, and a number of peculiar objects are described.
