Abstract: During the past few years the methods of immunization against diphtheria have been greatly improved. Safe immunizing agents have been produced which contain a large amount of specific antigen, so that it is now possible to bring about a reversal in the Schick reaction from positive to negative in a larger proportion of individuals in a shorter period of time than by the older methods of immunization. The results following the use of toxoid in the prevention of diphtheria are well known. Certain improvements in the production of toxoid have been made in an attempt to increase or concentrate the antigenic content and reduce the number of injections necessary to protect against infection. Various substances have been added to toxoid with the idea of decreasing the rate of absorption from the site of injection and thereby producing a longer stimulation to the production of protective antibodies.
